Harvard Business School, known familiarly as HBS, offers full-time M.B.A.s, doctoral programs and part-time programs for practicing executives. The school ranked first in the 2010 U.S. News listing of best business schools in America and it perennially appears near or at the top of the list. Harvard started HBS in 1909, after which time the program quickly expanded, due in large part to the success of its pioneering case-study method. Notable grads include Meg Whitman, former eBay CEO, and Rick Wagoner, who used to run General Motors.

Stanford Graduate School of Business placed second in the U.S. News 2010 ranking of business schools. Unlike many business schools, Stanford does not offer specialized degrees, keeping the school to a relatively small group of 750 MBAs. However, students can also study in areas of expertise outside of the business world, working with Stanford's law school and medical school. The program's alumni giving rate reflects on the positive experience of most of its graduates; Nike founder and Stanford grad Phil Knight recently made a $105 million dollar donation to the program.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management, located in idyllic Cambridge, placed third in the 2010 U.S. News rankings. Such placement represents to the program, which only began awarding MBAs in 1995; however, the school has existed since 1914 as an institution for both undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students. The program's live trading room allows students to immerse themselves in realistic trading situations unmatched by rival institutions. Sloan counts George P. Shultz and Jack Welch among its noted faculty.
