Schools for Alternative Health

Institutions across the United States provide certification, degree, master's and doctoral programs for the many aspects of alternative health practices, such as Oriental medicine or hypnotherapy. Some of these schools also include a Western approach and require students to take classes in anatomy and biology, chemistry, physics and other sciences.
  1. South Baylo University

    • South Baylo University, is the oldest Oriental medicine institution in the United States. The university has two campuses, located in Anaheim and Los Angeles, California.

      SBU offers a Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in the English, Chinese and Korean languages. The university also offers 300- and 500-hour certification programs for Bodyworks at both campuses.

      At South Baylo, the curriculum includes such subjects as acupuncture, herbology, holistic wellness, shiatsu and reflexology, in addition to traditional courses such as chemistry and anatomy.

    The Southwest Institute of Healing Arts

    • The Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA), located in Tempe, Arizona, offers a number of diploma, degree and certification programs.

      The Institute offers eight diploma programs in subjects including Western herbalism, professional massage and bodywork. Among the certification programs, SWIHA offers certificates in hypnotherapy, reflexology, holistic nutrition and reiki. SWIHA also offers several of the programs online, so students can study the principles and application of alternative health from their own homes.

    Five Branches University

    • Five Branches University offers certification, master's and doctoral degree programs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The university has two campuses located in Santa Cruz and San Jose in California.

      Students receive instruction in both Eastern and Western scientific and medicine courses. The university offers courses in TCM theory and diagnosis. Students also study Chinese herbal medicine at the campus's herbal pharmacies, which contain over 500 medicinal products.

      The master's and doctorate programs include a clinical requirement. PhD candidates engage in rigorous study of Western medicine as well as applying their knowledge of Chinese medicine.

    Mueller College of Holistic Studies

    • The Mueller College of Holistic Studies, located in Tempe, Arizona, has specialized in training holistic health practitioners for over 30 years.

      The college offers five programs. Students at Mueller College can study to become a hypnotherapist, personal fitness trainer, holistic health practitioner in integrated bodywork, Asian massage therapist or a Western massage therapist. The college also offers workshops for practitioners seeking to continue their education in the principles of holistic health.

      Mueller College students apply their knowledge and techniques at the Mueller College Community Wellness Center, which offers a variety of services at a lowered cost. Visitors can receive several types of massages, salt scrubs and acupressure.
