Schools for Health Information Technology

Health information technology professionals specialize in multiple aspects of record keeping and information processing for medical facilities, doctor's offices and other health-care organizations. This includes data management, medical billing and coding, managing electronic health records, cancer registrars and other related technology areas. According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, new health information technologist positions are expected to grow by approximately 20 percent by the year 2018.

    • The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh offers both bachelor's and master's programs in health information management. These technology-based degree programs prepare students to work in health care and medical facilities designing, using and maintaining electronic records management (and other related) systems. Students completing either program are eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam.

      The undergraduate curriculum consists of 63 credits of junior and senior level classes in data management, classification systems, cancer registry, quality management, medical terminology, systems analysis, and more. Classes may only be taken after freshmen and sophomore prerequisites and general education requirements have been met. Master's degree students may complete the 42 credit graduate program in one year of full-time study.

      The University of Pittsburgh's programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

    ITT Technical Institute

    • ITT Technical Institute offers an associates degree in health information technology at many of its California, Florida, Indiana, Idaho and New Mexico campuses. This degree can be completed in eight quarters of full-time study. Students may elect day, evening or online classes depending on campus availability. Classes include introduction to health-care records, coding, organization of health-care delivery and other related health-technology courses.

      All classes are offered for approximately four to five hours per week. Select California, Florida, Idaho and Indiana campus programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

    Spokane Community College

    • Washington state residents looking to become health information professionals might be in interested in the Associate's of Science in health information technology at the Spokane Community College. This 96-credit program can be completed in six terms of full-time study. Graduates typically are qualified to fill entry level positions in medical and health-care facilities and will be eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam.

      Applicants must submit all admissions materials including an application, SAT/ASSET/ACT scores (students only need one scores from one exam), and should have previously taken a college level mathematics and chemistry class.

      Spokane Community College's health information technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
