Community Psychology Doctoral Programs

Community psychology is a field of psychology that focuses on working with communities as a whole rather than individuals. For example, instead of seeing clients for individual or family therapy, community psychologists work in settings such as community organizations, government agencies and nonprofit groups to promote mental health and enact healthy changes. Community psychologists focus on nurturing and developing the strengths of diverse communities and promoting programs and policies that lead to positive social change.
  1. DePaul University

    • Created in 2001, DePaul's Community Psychology PhD program embodies the mission of this urban Catholic university. The program has a specific emphasis on social justice issues and training students to work with community organizations that serve traditionally marginalized populations.

o this end, students spend two years in a service-learning practicum at a community agency where they conduct research and carry out a project to benefit the organization. Required coursework includes Professional Ethics, Psychology of Women, Prevention Methods and Program Evaluation, and students have the option to earn additional certificates in Community Development or Women's and Gender Studies.

All students who are admitted to this highly selective program receive tuition waivers and stipends in exchange for serving as a teaching/research assistant.

    University of Hawaii

    • The University of Hawaii offers a PhD in Community and Cultural Psychology at its flagship campus in Manoa, located on the island of Oahu. Students start with foundation courses in cross-cultural, developmental and social psychology before choosing an emphasis in conflict resolution, disability studies, planning studies, policy studies, or disaster management and humanitarian assistance.

No matter what concentration students choose, the rich diversity of Hawaii and the neighboring Pacific islands provide an array of settings for practicum and research experiences. For example, each summer a new group of practicum students spend six weeks in rural Hawaii to work on community development projects.

Admission is competitive but not limited to applicants with a bachelor's degree in psychology--students with degrees in related fields also are encouraged to apply, especially those with significant research experience and interest in Asian/Pacific Islander issues.
