Nursing Education & College Reimbursement

Earning a nursing degree can be expensive. Many would-be nurses who turn to student loans find paying them back a financial strain. Several programs help nurses pay for their college expenses, or even get reimbursed for them.
  1. Pell Grant

    • The Pell Grant is a federal, need-based program that pays part of the undergraduate tuition for students who qualify. Students can apply for a Pell Grant by filling out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

    Scholarships

    • Scholarships are merit-based programs that help students with tuition and living expenses. Hundreds of scholarships are available to nurses at all levels of education .

    Employers

    • Employers sometimes offer tuition reimbursement benefits so that you can further your education as a nurse. To qualify, you generally have to agree to work for that employer for a certain period after you earn your degree.

    Student Loan Forgiveness

    • A registered nurse employed full time by a nonprofit health care agency can apply through the Human Resources and Services Administration to receive forgiveness on up to 60 percent of her education loans after two years of service.

    Tuition Waivers

    • Tuition waivers are state-based programs. Not all states offer them. Eligibility criteria differ among those that do, but typical recipients are older students and students who can demonstrate financial need.
