The Inter-University Council of East Africa offers three scholarships per year for prospective Ph.D. students to study at a recognized institution of higher learning in East Africa. The scholarships are open to students from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda and are only for candidates who intend to study development. Fields in this category (as defined by the council) include banking, public policy, law, and microfinance.
The Kulika Scholarships, funded by the Kulika Charitable Trust, are open to students from Uganda. Scholarships are offered for study at the University of Leeds and the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, and through an open application process in which the student selects the school. The fields in which the scholarships are offered vary from year to year based on Kulika's assessment of the areas of greatest need. The Ford IFP (International Fellowships Program) is open to prospective master's and doctoral students from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Candidates must not have studied outside of Africa and must hold a bachelor's degree (for master's candidates) or a master's degree (for Ph.D. applicants). The fellowships cover tuition, living expenses, travel, and insurance. Applicants must present a plan demonstrating how their field of study will prepare them for leadership in one of the Ford Foundation's areas of focus.
Undergraduate scholarships are available for female students in East Africa through the Zawadi Africa Education Fund. Applicants should apply for the college of their choice and fill out a separate application through Zawadi for funding. These grants are designed for academically gifted girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Grants are available for master's-level study at several Australian universities through grants from the Australian government. Candidates should possess at least a four-year university degree. Scholarships available vary from country to country, but focus on high-need fields and include areas such as natural resource management, law, and maternal/child health. Ten scholarships are available for master of laws study and five for Ph.D. study at the Tanzanian-German Center for Postgraduate Study, a school at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Applicants are required to have either a bachelor's degree in law or an master of laws. They should also have good working knowledge of both English and German.
The Aga Khan Foundation offers scholarships for students in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda who wish to pursue master's or doctoral studies. Scholars must demonstrate both strong academic performance and genuine financial need. Half of the scholarship is considered a loan and must be repaid within five years of graduation. Preference is given to students under 30 years of age.
