Universities in Canada Offering Scholarships

Students attending universities in Canada may qualify for scholarships based on their academic performance, financial need or excellence in art or sports. Scholarships range from one-time awards to incoming students to long-term scholarships that cover the entire costs of a student's education. Some scholarships require an application, while others are awarded automatically when a student applies for admissions.
  1. University of Toronto Mississauga

    • The University of Toronto Mississauga offers scholarships to new and continuing students, as well as to graduate students. New students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents with a final admission average of 88 percent and above receive scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. The average is computed using students' final marks, excluding summer school marks. Scholarships also are offered for continuing students through various departments, including economics, anthropology, language studies, mathematics, political science and sociology. Students may be nominated by their academic department or recognized for their extracurricular activities, academic achievement or financial need. Graduating students are eligible for a number of awards and medals based on their academic performance in their chosen program, including chemistry, humanities, sciences, social sciences, management and other fields.

    University of Alberta

    • Full-time freshman students at the University of Alberta can help finance their studies with an Academic Excellence Scholarship valued from $1,000 to $5,000, based on their final admission average of at least 85 percent. Students also may vie for about 60 Entrance Scholastic Distinction Scholarships valued at up to $50,000. Students must have an award average of about 95 percent from their 10th- through 11th-grade years and must submit references and an essay. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Scholarship is valued at $1,000, and approximately 50 awards are made to entering freshman in undergraduate programs. Students must receive one of the top 50 final scores for the IB diploma. Advanced Placement Scholarships of $1,000 are offered to students achieving the top 50 scores on the AP diploma who are beginning undergraduate studies at the university. The Entrance Leadership Scholarship Competition provides about 100 scholarships worth up to $20,000 to freshman undergraduate students demonstrating leadership qualities in their communities and who have an award average of 80 percent and up. Continuing, transfer and international students also may qualify for scholarships, such as the Continuing Undergraduate/Transfer Scholastic Distinction Scholarships worth up to $18,000, and country-specific awards for students coming from China, Germany, India, Mexico and the United States.

    The University of British Columbia

    • Students at the University of British Columbia can receive scholarships from the university or other organizations. More than 80 merit-based scholarships valued at $5,000 to $40,000 are awarded to undergraduate students who have graduated from Canadian high schools or are transferring from other Canadian institutions. High school students also may apply for more than 10 financial need-based scholarships of up to $40,000 over four years, and outstanding international students also may be eligible for awards. The President's Entrance Scholarship provides $2,500 to domestic undergraduate students, and disabled and aboriginal students also may qualify for need- and merit-based scholarships. Students also may acquire scholarships via clubs, unions and companies or through their connections to specific geographic regions and demographic groups. Scholarships also may be awarded to students studying over the summer. Women studying part-time, as well as exchange students and those showing academic excellence and leadership in the community, also may qualify for scholarships.
