Grants for Children to Attend College Who Lost a Parent

Prospective or current college students with one or both deceased parents can qualify for any number of scholarship or grant programs. Scholarships are often related to the parent or parents' cause of death, like breast cancer, or they can be open to anyone who has lost one or both parents. Interested applicants should look for organizations that award scholarships to students in circumstances similar to theirs.
  1. LIFE Lessons Scholarship

    • Students may apply for the LIFE Lessons Scholarship if one or both of their parents is deceased. There are no restrictions on the cause of death. To be eligible, students must be between 17 and 24, be accepted by a college, university or trade school in the United States or Puerto Rico, and submit an essay or video on the impact their parent or legal guardian's death had on their lives. According to the LIFE Lessons website, it awards one $10,000 scholarship and several other scholarships up to $5,000.

    MaryEllen Locher Foundation

    • The MaryEllen Locher Foundation scholarship program is open to any student who has lost a parent to breast cancer or is the child of a breast cancer survivor. Students must be full-time students at a two- or four-year college and write three essays on how their parent's cancer diagnosis impacted their life. According to its website, the foundation awards scholarships based on eligibility, essays, grades and financial need.

    Forgotten Dependents

    • The Forgotten Dependents scholarship program awards scholarships and grants to students who have lost at least one parent by any cause, especially those children of deceased active duty military personnel or those missing-in-action, according to the program's website. To qualify, students must be unmarried United States citizens between 16 and 25 and submit an essay of 500 words or more expressing their goals, objectives and other relevant information.
