College Grants for Students With a Deceased Parent

While grief from losing a parent is a different process for everyone, luckily, due to the generosity of private donors, corporations, charitable organizations, non-profit organizations and schools, there are several scholarships and grants available for students with a deceased parent. There are grants for specific fields of study, merit-based scholarships and need-based grants available.
  1. Walter and Shirley Sperber Scholarship

    • The Walter and Shirley Sperber Scholarship is offered to students at Michigan State University. To qualify, you must have a deceased parent, be an incoming freshman at Michigan State University and have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Students also have to write an essay on the hardships they've faced due to their parents' death, how they have overcome adversity and their future educational and career goals. The award amount is $2,000.

    Roger Nyhart Memorial Scholarship

    • The Roger Nyhart Memorial Scholarship is offered to a student at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania. To qualify, students must be a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and live in the chapter house, have at least one dead parent and demonstrate financial need. The award amount is $1,000.

    Kids' Chance Scholarship

    • The Kids' Chance Scholarship is offered to students by the Alabama Law Foundation. To qualify, you must have a parent who has been severely injured or killed on the job, must demonstrate financial need and you must have a high level of academic accomplishment and exhibit leadership qualities. The award amount is between $500-$2,500.

    Mary Ellen Locher Foundation Scholarship

    • The Mary Ellen Locher Foundation Scholarship is offered to students by the Mary Ellen Locher Foundation. To qualify, you must have a parent that has survived or died as a result of breast cancer and demonstrate financial need. Students must write an essay about the challenges they've faced due to their parents' illness. The goal of the scholarship fund is to ease the financial burden of the student's family. The award amount is between $1,000-$3,000.
