The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) offers scholarships to prospective secondary math teachers. If you are a college student preparing to teacher secondary school mathematics, you can apply for the $10,000 scholarship to assist you with your studies. You must be a college sophomore at a four- or five-year college or university in the following academic year to be eligible for the award. There are other requirements, including student membership in NCTM and graduation requirements.
Math for America (MfA) is a non profit organization that offers a five-year fellowship to recent college graduates and mid-career professionals who are willing to commit to teaching in public schools. The MfA fellowship offers a $100,000 stipend (in addition to a full time teacher's salary), mentoring and professional development, and a full tuition scholarship to obtain a master's degree in education. In addition to the MfA scholarship, the foundation also offers a separate fellowship to teachers in New York City public schools (includes a $70,000 stipend over four years) and a Master Teacher Fellowship for "exceptional public secondary school math teachers," which includes a four-year, $60,000 stipend.
The Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship supports men and women "committed to teaching science and mathematics" at high schools in the United States. The foundation supports new teachers from their first steps into the classroom through their early career years. As of July 2010, the award is valued at $150,000 spread over five years. This includes tuition assistance for obtaining the teaching credential, a monthly stipend, professional development and teaching materials. All applications for the Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship must be submitted online.
