PhD Scholarships in the Netherlands

The Netherlands boasts heavily subsidized study from its local government, offering far cheaper university tuition than many other countries around the world. Even though their undergraduate education is comparitively cheap, master's degrees and PhDs can still be expensive. Gaining a scholarship for a PhD is highly competitive and few are offered due to the cost to the government and to the educational facility. Nevertheless, there are many opportunities depending on the type of course you want to research, and also the country from which you are coming.
  1. ICS Graduate School Scholarship

    • The Interuniversity Centre for Social Science (ICS) in the Netherlands offer a highly competitive, highly subsidized, and much sought-after scholarship for potential PhD students. The ICS scholarship primarily favors social science students, though it also accepts students in the fields of mathematics, statistics and economics. The scholarship covers full tuiton fees, living expenses, and research costs. The four-year course also pays a salary for each student it accepts to the program.     HSP Huygens Programme

    • The HSP Huygens Programme is an international programme that accepts applications from students worldwide. However, for PhD students, the programme only accepts Chinese, Turkish, or Croatian international students. Many programmes such as this exist offering PhD opportunities depending on country. This programme, due to its international focus, heavily favors students applying for courses in Dutch, Dutch Literature, or Neerlandistiek. This scholarship programme receives 4 million euros in total funding from the government and scholarships are allocated depending on demand and cost of individual courses.

    NFP Fellowship

    • Like the HSP Huygens Programme, The NFP Fellowship, offers country-specified scholarships for PhD courses. Advance Africa accepts applications from Kenya, Ivory Coast, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, for PhD study in Holland. The budget for indivudal PhD courses is a maximum of 74,000 euros. These scholarships are designed for mid-career professionals looking to expand their career opportunities and potential.
