Rotary Ambassador Scholarships

The Ambassador Scholarship program of the Rotary Club Foundation is one of the world's largest privately funded student exchange programs. Over $500 million has been provided by Rotary to fund the program, which is intended to expand international understanding and friendships. Since its beginning in 1947, more than 40,000 students from 100 countries, including the U.S., have received scholarships. In 2010-2011, nearly 800 Rotary Ambassadors will be studying in 70 countries.
  1. Participants

    • The program is open to students who are citizens of any country where there is at least one Rotary Club. They must have at least two years of outstanding achievement in college- or university-equivalent education and have at least two years of work experience. They are required to speak the languages of the home and host countries, know the history, politics and culture of both countries and have a demonstrated record of community service. Previously, short-term Cultural and Multiyear Ambassador scholarships were available, but the trustees eliminated those programs in 2009. The focus is on increasing awareness of cultural differences and developing leadership.

    Academic Year Ambassador

    • Scholarship funding is provided for one academic year (normally nine months) and ranges from $11,000 to $23,000, depending on the country, institution and course of study. Students must maintain quality academic performance and work with local Rotary clubs, schools and civic organizations in the host country. When they return home, Ambassadors share their experiences through local Rotary organizations and media interviews.

    Rotary World Peace Scholars

    • Each year, Rotary chooses 70 scholars for two-year master's degree programs at Rotary Foundation's Centers for International Studies around the world. All will have received bachelor's degrees by the time the fellowship year begins. In addition to meeting the requirements for admission into a master's program, they must be fluent in the language of the country where they will study. Relevant work or volunteer experience and excellent leadership skills are a must. Areas of study include conflict resolution, international relations and peace studies.

    Application Process

    • The availability of Ambassador scholarships varies from year to year. Applicants may not be related to a living member of Rotary through blood or marriage. Also ineligible are employees of any international, district or local Rotary organization. Applications are made through the local Rotary Club, beginning at the first of the year. Deadlines fall in the later part of March. Winners are announced in December for scholarships that begin the following fall.
