Colleges for Occupational Therapy Assistants

Prospective occupational therapy assistants should see multiple employment opportunities upon graduation, as employment opportunities are expected to grow by 30 percent by 2018 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Choosing a college to learn the necessary skills is an important choice and can increase the chances of securing employment after earning a degree. Students have options throughout the country when selecting a school.
  1. Brown Mackie College

    • The Occupational Therapy Assistant program at Brown Mackie College is offered at 19 of the school's campus locations throughout the country. Students earn an associate of Applied Science degree and can complete their studies in approximately two years. Courses are taught with a focus on kinetics and kinematics; disorders and diseases of the physical system; and the human body as a whole. Upon graduation students are eligible to take the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) Certification Examination.

      Tuition at Brown Mackie College will vary by location, however all campuses offer financial aid.

    Nashville State Community College

    • Located in Music City, Nashville State Community College offers a two-year degree program which awards students an Associate of Applied Science in Occupational Therapy Assistant. Students learn skills in fields including geriatrics, mental health; pediatrics; occupational human health development; and management skills. In addition, students must complete five general education courses and participate in fieldwork experiences.

      Tuition at Nashville State Community College is $111 per credit hour as of 2010. Financial aid options are available, as well as monthly payment plans.

    Mercy College

    • Students looking for a flexible study option that will allow them to maintain full-time employment may benefit from the evening courses and weekend labs offered at Mercy College in New York. Seventy-two credit hours are required and can be taken in both full- and part-time options. Courses include therapeutic modalities; medical conditions; adulthood and maturity; interaction skills; and childhood and adolescence. In addition two fieldwork experiences must be completed.

      As of 2010, tuition for full time students is $8,245 per term; part-time students pay $692 per credit. Work study programs and financial aid options are available.
