Dance Team Colleges

College dance teams play an integral part of many schools of higher learning throughout the United States. These teams offer participants an opportunity to extend their dance team experience beyond high school while providing entertainment at sporting events and campus performances. Many of the colleges that have dance teams do not offer a dance major, so it is important to be aware of the programs offered on each college campus before enrolling based on the existence of a dance team.
  1. Texas Christian University Showgirls

    • The Showgirls support the athletics programs at Texas Christian University with performances at all football and basketball games, along with baseball tournaments. The members have years of dance training and spend many hours of practice to maintain their high level of precision and entertainment in their performances. Texas Christian University does offer a degree in dance through their School for Classic and Contemporary Dance; though some members of the Showgirls are working toward degrees in dance, it is not required for membership in the TCU Showgirls.

    University of Central Arkansas Honeybears

    • The University of Central Arkansas Honeybears perform at sporting events like football and basketball games along with making community appearances and putting a positive face on the University of Central Arkansas. The team requires all members to have a strong background in dance, to maintain high academic performance and to commit to around 10 hours of practice each week throughout the academic school year. The University does have a College of Communication and Fine Arts but it does not offer a degree in dance.

    Washington State University Crimson Girls

    • The Crimson Girls were first introduced to Washington State University in 2003. This energetic precision dance team entertains fans at football, basketball and volleyball games throughout the academic year. The team specializes in pom, hip hop and jazz routines. Washington State University does not offer a degree in dance. Members of the Crimson Girls have an eclectic mix of interests and major in one of the more than 95 academic choices at the university.

    Idaho State University Bengal Dance Team

    • A nationally ranked college dance team, the Idaho State University Bengal Dancers perform at football, basketball, soccer, volleyball and rugby games. The team performs at community events and supports school spirit throughout the Idaho State University campus. Members must come with a strong dance background and willingness to perform throughout the academic school year. Though Idaho State University does not offer a dance major, team members come together through their common interest in dance while focusing on one of the many academic offerings available to them.

    Louisiana State University Golden Girls

    • The Louisiana State University Golden Girls have a long history of dancing at football games. Considered to be a compliment to the Louisiana State University Tiger Band, this dance team has been partnered with the band since 1959. The Golden Girls have become a fan favorite on the Louisiana State University campus. Membership is open to all Louisiana State University students along with incoming freshmen. Members go through an intense tryout during the Spring each year. Though Louisiana State University does not offer a dance degree, they do offer a solid Performing Arts Academy which combines both theater and dance.

    Penn State University Lionettes

    • The Penn State University Lionettes Dance team promotes spirit across the Penn State campus at charity events and sporting events. Started in 1995, the team was formed as a club sport and is self-managed. Members are recommended to have a strong dance background prior to trying out for the team. Tryouts are held each Spring with new members beginning practice during the summer months. The team has enjoyed competing nationally having traveled to places like Daytona, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada for competition, Though Penn State University does not offer a dance major, it does offer a dance minor.

    Texas State University Strutters

    • The Texas State Strutters have a long history of being a precision dance team. Known for their high kicks and energetic halftime routines, the Strutters have been around since 1960. Over 3,000 members have participated in this longstanding Texas tradition. The team has performed both nationally and internationally including in the People's Republic of China, at Presidential Inaugural Parades, in five movies and a Coca-Cola commercial. Texas State University offers a degree in dance through the Department of Art and Dance.

    Kilgore Rangerettes

    • The oldest precision dance team in the United States, the Kilgore College Rangerettes are famous for their precision dance routines. It was this team that brought dance to the football field for the first time in 1940. The team has traveled and performed both nationally and internationally in places like Venezuela, Hong Kong, France, Singapore and Romania. The team has also graced the covers of many major magazines including Life, Newsweek and Texas Monthly. Kilgore College is a two-year institution offering a variety of associate's degrees.
