A dress code helps the nursing students concentrate on school. When the student does not have to decide what to wear every morning, he can get dressed much faster. In class, the student is not distracted by the clothes of his peers and can focus his attention. The nursing uniform helps students take their role more seriously. The uniform reminds them that they are going to be a nurse and that they must treat their studies with respect. Many nursing programs include clinical work. Student nurses do not have to change for this clinical work since they are always in their uniforms.
Nursing uniforms are inexpensive, and students can save money by not having to have a large wardrobe. Wearing uniforms puts all students on an equal basis; students with less money will not be embarrassed by their clothing. Nursing uniforms are generally made of loose-fitting cotton that is quite comfortable. Students can better focus on their studies since their clothes are comfortable.
Some people feel uniforms curb individual expression. Students may be more tempted to express themselves in other ways, such as with accessories. Uniforms can make students feel like less of an individual. Students who wear the uniform to and from school may feel self-conscious walking around in the uniform. They may elect to bring traveling clothes, but this can be time-consuming, both in selecting and changing. Nursing uniforms are generally thin, and on cold days it may not be the best attire to have on when outside.
The uniform may serve no purpose for students who are not engaged in the clinical portion of their training. On the other hand, nurses come into contact with bacteria and messes in their day of work. The nursing uniform is much easier to clean than normal clothes, and, if it is ruined, it is inexpensive to replace.
