Indiana Colleges That Teach Equestrians

Students travel from all over the country to study in colleges and universities in Indiana. Indiana is home to more than 40 campuses of higher education offering hundreds of degree programs in almost every study area. Schools offered in Indiana range from small regional campuses to mid-sized universities to major a major Big Ten campus. Many of these schools also offer equestrian programs.
  1. Earlham College

    • Earlham College is located in Richmond, Indiana, and is a small church-affiliated liberal arts college. Among the many activities Earlham College offers its students on its 800-acre campus, the Equestrian Program is one of the most popular and thriving. A student cooperative operates this program and cares for the horses, maintains the facility and provides riding lessons to other students. This program's intent is to make equestrian education as accessible to the community as possible. Students and community members alike are encouraged to join the Earlham College Equestrian Program, whether they be experienced riders or first-timers.

    Indiana University-Bloomington

    • A Big Ten school located in Bloomington, Indiana, Indiana University-Bloomington offers more than just Big Ten sports teams. The Indiana University Equestrian Club has more than 50 student members. The club competes in horse shows; holds socials, demonstrations, fundraisers, campus events and horse clinics; and provides many volunteer opportunities. Students may join the club regardless of level of experience; the club has students who are expert riders as well as students who are mounting horses for the first time. Students choosing to compete in horse shows do so through the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association and competitions offered include Hunter Seat and Western. The school also offers riding lessons by coaches and officers.

    Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis

    • Located in Indianapolis, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis is a joint campus. In addition to their myriad of sports teams and hundreds of academic majors, the campus also offers many on-campus student activities, including the Equestrian Club. Students who compete for the club do so through the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association, though not all students active in the club must compete. The club provides equine training and education to students through lessons and competition. Students involved in the program ride and care for the school's horses.

    Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College

    • Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is located in Saint Mary of the Woods, Indiana, and is one of the few schools that offer equine studies as an academic degree program. The Equine Studies department offers majors in equine business management, equine studies and equine training and instruction, minors in equine science and equine studies, and associate's degrees in equine studies. These degrees prepare students for careers working with horses as stable managers, horse trainers or future veterinarians. The school also offers equestrian clubs, including the Saddle Club and the Equestrian Team.
