Duke University is located in Durham and is one of the nation's most well-respected universities. Russian is taught at the undergraduate and graduate level by Duke's Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies. Undergraduates, who enroll in Duke's Trinity College, have the opportunity to major in Russian language and culture or Slavic and Eurasian studies. College students interested in Russian may opt instead to minor in Russian culture and language or Russian literature in translation.
UNC-Chapel Hill is a highly selective public university that has a department dedicated to Slavic languages and literature in addition to hosting the Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East Europeans Studies in collaboration with Duke University. Students pursuing a bachelor's degree from UNC-Chapel Hill may major in Russian language and culture or Slavic and East European languages and cultures. Minors are conferred in these subject areas as well for students interested in earning a bachelor's degree in other majors.
Wake Forest University is a private institution centered in Winston-Salem. WFU teaches Russian language classes in its Department of German and Russian, which offers undergraduates the opportunity to major in Russian or receive a minor. Students generally are not expected to declare their major until the second semester of their sophomore year, at which point they should have achieved upper-level (200-level coursework) proficiency in Russian.
Davidson College is a highly selective private liberal arts college in the town of Davidson. Although the college offers Russian language instruction at all levels, Davidson does not offer a Russian language major. Students who are interested in Russian may minor in study of the language or major in Russian Area Studies or Russian Literature under the auspices of the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies. Additionally, Davidson College has a cooperative program with the Moscow State Institute for International Relations that allows students to spend a month in Russia, although no prior knowledge of the language is required for participation.
