How to Register for the CIA Exam

In order to become a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) you must pass the CIA exam. There are many eligibility requirements that a candidate must meet before he or she is allowed to take the exam. In addition to meeting the eligibility requirements, there is a specific registration process that one must follow prior to taking the CIA exam.

      Determine whether or not you meet all of the eligibility requirements. A candidate must hold a bachelor's degree and provide a copy of their diploma and transcripts along with their registration forms. Candidates must also provide a character reference from a responsible person such as a manager, and provide evidence of at least two years of professional auditing experience.

      Visit The Institute of Internal Auditors website (theiia.org) to find the nearest testing location. Scroll to the middle of the page and click "Become CIA Certified". This link will bring you to the page where you can obtain additional information regarding the CIA exam and your local IIA chapter.

      Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link that is labeled "Requirements and Forms." Print out all of the required forms that are linked to this page, including the Character Reference Form and Experience Verification Form.

      Complete the required forms. Gather a copy of your diploma, transcripts and all of your registration forms and submit them by mail to your local IIA chapter before the deadline. The registration deadline for the May exam is March 31st. You must register by September 30th to take the November exam. Upon receipt of your registration information, your local IIA chapter will contact you to confirm your exam date and time.
