Colleges With Master's Degrees for Christian Counselors

A master's degree in Christian counseling is designed for those who want to practice counseling based on Christian beliefs and values. While different programs have different requirements, most of these master's programs require only that students have a bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited university. An undergraduate degree specifically in Christian counseling is not required.

    • Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, CO, master's degree in counseling program requires students to complete 60 credit hours of coursework in a minimum of two and a half years. The program offers both night and weekend courses so students can balance both school and work or families.

    Dallas Theological Seminary

    • The Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas, offers an M.A. in biblical counseling. With regional and national accreditation, the Dallas Theological Seminary requires students to complete 90 hours of coursework, including 22 hours in prescribed Bible exposition courses, 18 hours in systematic theology, four hours in spiritual life and evangelism and 43 hours in prescribed counseling courses under the direction of the department.

    Westminster Theological Seminary

    • Since 1968, the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation at the Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA, has trained Christian counselors with a variety of degree options, including an M.A. in biblical counseling. This degree requires at least two years of full-time study or however long it takes for a student to complete 56 credit hours of coursework. When finished with the studies, students should be able to demonstrate their understanding of the broad context of counseling and their skill in biblical counseling practice.

    South Florida Bible College and Theological Seminary

    • The South Florida Bible College and Theological Seminary was established in 1985. It offers an M.A. in Christian counseling degree program that requires students to complete 52 hours of coursework and clinical supervision that includes, but is not limited to, 600 hours of a counseling practicum with an approved Christian counselor or psychologist, as well as a thesis. Upon completion of the degree, students should be able to develop mastery of various approaches to counseling that can be utilized in the Christian community.
