Christian Master's Degrees

Christian schools have concentrations in particular varieties of Christianity: Catholicism, Lutheranism, Methodism, Baptist and Orthodoxy, to name a few. Each individual should choose the one that fits his beliefs. Master's degrees cover many more aspects of Christianity and include concentrations in divinity, Christian leadership, human services, apologetics, Biblical counseling, and pastoral, urban- and youth ministries.
  1. Master of Divinity

    • Master of Divinity is the most common degree in religious schools. It is the standard professional degree for ministry and is present in the vast majority of Christian schools. This degree includes topics such as scripture, history of Catholic tradition, systematic theology, liturgy and Christian ethics. Some schools offering a Master of Divinity include Harvard University, Talbot School of Theology and Azusa Pacific University.

    Master of Arts in Apologetics

    • Master of Arts in Apologetics offers students knowledge related to Biblical defense of the Christian faith. This degree includes philosophical foundations of Christianity, attributes of God and knowledge of major objections to Christianity and non-Christian views: skepticism, atheism, nontraditional belief systems and secular world views. Some Christian schools offering this degree include Luther Rice Seminary & University, Biola University and Harding University.

    Master of Arts in Christian Studies

    • Master of Arts in Christian Studies stresses the distinctions between historical, theological and spiritual Christian movements. They emphasize sanctification and healing. Students learn Christian theology through scripture and church history. This degree also includes background of cultural settings in postmodern America and overseas settings. Some schools offering this degree include Mars Hill Graduate School, Crown College and Dallas Theological Seminary.

    Master of Arts in Christian Leadership

    • A Master of Arts in Christian Leadership prepares students to serve in Christian ministries. This degree teaches Biblical leadership principles and leadership strategies. Courses include Biblical foundations of Christian leaders, the life of the leader, team leadership and conflict resolution, and ministry of teaching and preparation of the sermon. Among the schools offering a master's in Christian Leadership are Denver Seminary and Grand Canyon University.

    Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling and Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling

    • The Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling and Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling teach students how to serve as counselors in churches and ministries. They provide Biblical, theological and practical education. They cover Bible interpretation, skills in teaching, preaching, writing and pastoral services. These degrees are available through several schools, including Luther Rice Seminary & University, Dallas Theological Seminary and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
