How to Cite a Film in a Turabian Footnote

Turabian citation format, created during the tenure of Kate Turabian, secretary for dissertation submissions at the University of Chicago from 1930 to 1958. Hence, Turabian formatting is basically the same formatting that is presented in "The Chicago Manual of Style," which is commonly referred to simply as Chicago Style. Turabian citations may be used for research in any academic discipline, whether the natural or social sciences or the humanities. As of September of 2011, the latest version of Turabian employs footnotes with a bibliography or parenthetical references with a reference list at the text’s end. As with other citation formats, film has a particular footnote and bibliography format.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the "Reference" tab in Microsoft Word. Click the "Style" arrow in the "Citations & Bibliography" panel and select "Chicago." In the "Footnotes" panel to the immediate left, click on "Insert Footnote." The program instantly places a line and a footnote at the bottom of the page.

    • 2

Type the contents of the footnote next to number one. According to Purdue’s Online Writing Lab, format the footnote or endnote as: 1. Firstname Lastname, Title of Work, Format, directed/performed by Firstname Lastname (Original release year; City: Studio/Distributor, Video release year.), Medium. Place the film’s title in quotation marks in the footnote.

    • 3

Type the name of the film director and the release date in parentheses at the end of the sentence that references the film, if you choose to use Turabian with parenthetical documentation. The period goes after the second parenthesis.

    • 4

Type the bibliography on a separate page after the conclusion. The "Bibliography" tab in Word only formats bibliographic entries for books, so you will have to type the film format as provided by Purdue OWL: Lastname, Firstname. Title of Work. Format. Directed/Performed by Firstname Lastname. Original Release Year. City: Studio/Distributor, Video release year. Medium. Place the film’s title in quotation marks in the bibliography or reference entry. Place the first line of each entry in the bibliography flush to the left and indent subsequent lines of each entry five spaces.
