Click on the references tab at the top of the page to open the footnote/endnote function.
Place your cursor at the spot in the document to which you wish your footnote to correspond.
Click on the word "footnote" in the reference tab. The program will generate a superscript at the spot selected, and a corresponding number at the foot of the page, ready for you to type in your note. This program auto-numbers footnotes and formats your page appropriately.
Place your cursor at the point in your document with which you wish the footnote to correspond.
Click on the insert tab at the top of the page. Select footnote/endnote from the pull-down menu. Leave the setting on "automatic" for the program to insert a superscript at the note point in the manuscript and place a corresponding number at the bottom of the page.
Number your footnotes using Roman numerals, letters or other symbols by selecting "character" instead of automatic or by clicking on the square button with three dots on it under the rectangular blank. If you select character, type in the desired character in the blank. If you select the button, a keyboard will pop up, allowing you to select letters, symbols or numbers.
Formatting and sequencing is done automatically by the program.
Type or paste your document into Google a Google word page. Place your cursor at the point where you need the note.
Select the "Insert" button from the tool bar at the top of the page.
Select "footnote" from the pull down menu. Google docs doesn't have the flexibility presented by Open Office, but it will place a superscript at the entry point, put a corresponding number at the bottom of the page, and automatically format your document around your footnotes just like the other two word processors.
