How to Insert a Number for a Footnote

Footnotes are used in scholarly articles and books to reference facts stated in the text. They also direct the reader to another source that contains background information that can help the reader understand a text more thoroughly. Footnote numbers are not difficult to add with the help of a pre-formatted word processing program, such as Microsoft Word. Various versions and types of word processing programs generally have a similar process for inserting numbers for footnotes.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your cursor at the end of the word or sentence where you would like to insert a footnote.

    • 2

Click "Insert" in the menu bar, and and then point to "Reference" and select "Footnote."

    • 3

Select the "Number Format" that you desire in the footnotes menu box.

    • 4

Click "Insert" to place a footnote in the desired area. This will leave a footnote number in the text area you have chosen, and you can then fill in appropriate text from a reference to go along with the footnote number you have added.

    • 5

Save the document once you have added the footnote number and text.
