How to Do an MLA Footnote

Unlike some citation and publication formats, such as Chicago and Turabian styles, MLA (Modern Language Association) style does not allow sources to be cited in footnotes. Rather, MLA style requires that you cite sources parenthetically within the text and then provide full bibliographic information in your works-cited page. However, MLA style does allow the use of footnotes for explaining a point further, or for recommending sources other than the specific one cited.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert an Arabic number in superscript within the text. This alerts your reader that he should check the bottom of the page for further information.

    • 2

Begin the footnote section two double-spaced lines below the main body of text.

    • 3

Begin each footnote with a number that corresponds to the superscripted number in the text. Follow the number with a period. For example:

      1. For more information pertaining to sea cucumbers, see Smith 1998 and Jordan 1956.

    • 4

Indent the first line of each footnote so that the number begins five spaces from the left margin. If a footnote takes more than one line, all lines other than the first should not be indented. This means that they will line up with the left margin.
