How to Number an Outline Using MLA

In addition to guidelines governing citation and reference style, the Modern Language Association also sets rules for all aspects of the text's appearance, including pagination. Ensuring that your manuscript is paginated correctly and consistently is an easy way to communicate hard work and professionalism. An outline comes before the text of a paper, and is designed to help a reader understand how your paper is structured. According to MLA guidelines, an outline should be paginated differently than the body text.

Instructions

    • 1

Number the first page of your outline with a lowercase roman numeral "i". If your outline is longer than a page, number the second page "ii," the third "iii," the fourth "iv" and so on.

    • 2

Position each successive numeral in the upper-right hand corner of the page. The numerals should appear flush with the right margin, and should be exactly a half-inch from the top of the page.

    • 3

Make sure your last name appears before the page number. For instance, the page number headers should appear as:

      Smith i

      Smith ii

      Smith iii

      Smith iv
