An outline comes before the text of a paper, and is designed to help a reader understand how your paper is structured. According to MLA guidelines, an outline should be paginated differently than the body text.

Number the first page of your outline with a lowercase roman numeral "i". If your outline is longer than a page, number the second page "ii," the third "iii," the fourth "iv" and so on.

Position each successive numeral in the upper-right hand corner of the page. The numerals should appear flush with the right margin, and should be exactly a half-inch from the top of the page.

Make sure your last name appears before the page number. For instance, the page number headers should appear as:
