How to Write Footnotes for Three Sources in a Row

Non fiction writers commonly use footnotes to cite sources from which they have gathered their facts, but footnotes are also incorporated in both fiction and nonfiction to include additional information that isn't necessary in the main body of the work. When writing a paragraph that only uses a single source, the footnote can go at the end of the paragraph. However, the rules are different when there are multiple sources throughout a paragraph.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete all research and outline-writing before writing your essay or research paper. Draft a works cited page to keep sources organized.

    • 2

Write the essay or research paper according to the outline using a word processing program.

    • 3

Place your cursor at the end of the first sentence that requires the footnote citation, for the first footnote in your series of three in a row. Click on the Insert option in the top navigation of the program, then select Reference, and finally click on Footnote.

    • 4

Write your footnote, which will appear at the bottom of the document, once you have placed the superscript number in the body text.

    • 5

Repeat steps three and four for the next two sentences in a row that require footnotes. Follow this process throughout the essay or research paper when multiple sources in a row require footnotes.
