How to Write a Footnote After Every Paragraph

Footnotes are used to add extra information that does not need to be stated within the text of an essay or to cite the sources from which you have drawn your facts. There are no rules regarding where you must place your footnotes nor how often throughout the text. In order to place a footnote after every paragraph, you need a lot of information about your subject and plenty of sources; enough so that you have written a complete paper and still have information to spare.

Research your topic thoroughly. If you have a valid university identification, you can use online functions such as Google Scholar and JStor. You may also use the university library whether or not you are a student; if you are not a student, however, most universities will not allow you to check out books.

    • 2

Write the works cited page of your paper, following the writing style called for in the assignment. This will help you gather a list of your references to cite throughout the paper.

    • 3

Write an outline of the paper itself. In order to make sure that you write footnotes after every paragraph, include each paragraph in that outline. You do not have to write a full text, simply state what you plan to say in that paragraph using bullets. Then make a note of the footnotes that you want to include at the end of each.

    • 4

Write your paper using this outline as a guide.

    • 5

Click on the "Insert" option on the navigation tool at the top of your document. Scroll down to the "Reference" option.

    • 6

Choose "Footnote" from the Reference menu. Specify where you want your footnotes to appear, what number you wish to start with and how you wish the numbering of your footnotes to appear.

    • 7

Type the text of your footnote once it appears on the page. Repeat this procedure for each footnote.
