How to Write a Paper on Buddhism

Based on the teaching of Siddharta Gautama (sixth century B.C.), Buddhism is a system of beliefs and philosophy, rather than a religion. Forsaking his position as a prince, Siddharta began his journey of trying to understand the world by forsaking materials possessions. During a night of meditation he came to understand the four noble truths: suffering is universal, suffering is caused by selfish desire, suffering is eased by meditation and suffering can only be eliminated by attaining enlightenment. Buddha means "awakened one" and people who adhere to this philosophy strive for personal spiritual development.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce the topic of Buddhism in your opening paragraph. Develop a strong topic sentence that will catch your reader's attention. Identify the topics you are going to cover in your paper on Buddhism.

    • 2

Develop supporting paragraphs about Buddhism, such as who was the founder, the principles and ethics of the philosophy and where it is practiced. In your conclusion, reiterate what you discussed in your paper and relate it back to your topic sentence.

    • 3

Write your essay about Buddhism in simple straight-forward English. Like Buddha himself, avoid language that is motivated by selfish desires to appear too clever. Don't use a big word when a small one will do; avoid run-on sentences.

    • 4

Leave your paper on Buddhism while you meditate and then come back to it from a more enlightened perspective. Review your paper for grammatical errors and typing mistakes.

    • 5

Ask a friend or family member with good editing skills to edit your paper on Buddhism. If you can find an editor who knows something about the philosophy, that is an added bonus as she may pick up on something you missed.
