How to Write a Thesis-Support Paper

Well-constructed papers begin with a well-written thesis statement. A thesis statement is a sentence found in the first paragraph of a paper that tells the reader what the essay is about. The body paragraphs of a paper should each be about a subtopic of your main idea, and each subtopic should be listed in the thesis statement. For instance, if you were writing a paper on cats, your thesis statement might be, "Cats are domesticated animals that are cute, soft and playful." Each body paragraph would be about one of these traits. This is how a thesis statement guides the reader.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce your paper's main idea in the first paragraph and tell the reader why this topic is important. Include your thesis statement, a sentence stating your main idea and three subtopics or details in order of importance supporting your main idea.

    • 2

Write about your first subtopic or detail in your second paragraph. Include all of the information that backs it up in this paragraph.

    • 3

State your second subtopic and explain it in your third paragraph. This is the second-most important subtopic, but it should be explained as thoroughly as the first.

    • 4

Write your fourth paragraph about your third, least important, subtopic. Emphasize the most important details.

    • 5

Close your essay with a fifth paragraph summarizing your paper. Restate your thesis statement in new words. Conclude with a solution, reaction, or final opinion on your topic.
