Meridith Manor is an equestrian career college near Waverly, West Va. All curriculum at Meridith Manor is dedicated to training riders, trainers and horse instructors. The school is located on a 130-acre campus, but it is a small school, with only 80-100 students on the campus at a time. Among the career paths at Meridith Manor are those for farriers, equine massage therapists and breeders.
Bethany College, founded in 1840, is in Bethany, West Va. As of May 2011, its student population numbered fewer than 1,000. It offers several equine-related programs at the Pegasus Farm Equestrian Center in nearby Wheeling. One of the notable offerings is the equine therapy program. This curriculum track prepares students to use horses in therapy activities for human patients with autism, cerebral palsy or other physical and mental disabilities. Other course work available includes training for equine management and pre-veterinary medicine.
West Virginia's flagship university, located in Morgantown, offers several courses dedicated to the study of horses. The school offers a minor in equine management, and as of May 2011 had plans to create a minor in equine science. Coursework available at West Virginia University include training in horse management, stable design and an introduction to therapeutic riding. The school also offers an equestrian team and a competitive horse-judging squad, a student organization that pits teams against each other in evaluating horse quality.
Pierpont Community & Technical College is part of Fairmont State University in the town of Fairmont. This community college does not have a traditional equestrian curriculum, but does offer several horse-related classes in its veterinary technician program. This program lets students prepare for a career as a veterinary technician, which may include assisting veterinarians in treating sick horses. Courses offered at Pierpont include one for horse management and one for health management of farm animals.
