Equestrian Veterinary Colleges

Several colleges and universities offer veterinary programs with specialties in equine studies. Most veterinary students take some courses in the care of horses, since their work may require such knowledge. However, students who intend to focus their careers on the care of horses should attend a school that has a dedicated equine program and, like the programs listed here, involves the local horse population in student activity and research.
  1. North Carolina State University

    • North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine offers an equine health program that covers issues, research and advancements in horse health. Students in the Equine Health Program can specialize in clinical service, research or teaching. The clinical service training can include work in the equine hospital, and the research can include examining hospital data or doing basic studies. Teaching can be lecturing or working with veterinary students in the clinics as well as working with post-graduate students or developing training programs for the hospital and outreach programs for practicing veterinarians.

    University of Tennessee

    • The University of Tennessee's College of Veterinary Medicine's Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences in Knoxville offers a program for advanced equine studies. The Tennessee Equine Veterinary Research Organization at the university is involved in research for the purpose of developing methods to better care for horses. Students prepare for this professional veterinary curriculum by taking three to four years of pre-veterinary courses. The four-year veterinary program involves three semesters of exclusive clinical experience in the Veterinary Medical Center.

    University of Florida

    • The University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine offers an equine program for students specializing in this type of care. Students work with the horse industry, horse owners and veterinarians in Florida. The equine veterinary extension programs cover strangles, management and prevention of infectious disease, colic, diarrhea, vaccination and de-worming, foal care and equine emergencies.

    University of California, Davis

    • The School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, includes a Center for Equine Health where students can participate in a master's program with a focus on the study of equine health. The Center for Equine Health provides training for equine specialists, scholarships for students whose focus is equine studies and many continuing education programs and educational seminars for practicing veterinarians and the general public. The center also publishes an array of educational material for veterinarians.
