Located in Morgantown, West Virginia, West Virginia University (WVU) is a public research institution with various sister campuses throughout the state. Some of the other campuses include the Institute of Technology, a clinical campus for premedical students and a medical center. WVU enrolls approximately 30,000 students each year and offers more than 190 degree programs (as of 2011). WVU has produced Rhodes scholars and offers graduate degrees in law, medicine and dentistry. The state legislature initially founded the university in 1862 as the Agricultural College of West Virginia.
Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, the University of Charleston is a private college located in Charleston, West Virginia. It enrolls approximately 1,300 students each year (as of 2011). The university offers popular majors for students that include environmental biology, marketing management, teacher education, sports and fitness administration and interior design. Students may pursue an associate or baccalaureate degree in nursing or apply to the School of Pharmacy.
Founded in 1950, Appalachian Bible College is located in Bradley, West Virginia. The college is private, Christian Baptist affiliated and sits on approximately 150 acres. The school was officially incorporated in 1954 and received accreditation in 1967 by the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges (AABC). The West Virginia State Board of Education began granting the Bachelor of Theology (Th.B.) degree in 1968. The college offers additional majors in interdisciplinary ministries, pastoral studies and youth and family ministries. Students may also pursue a master's degree in ministry.
A member of the United Methodist Church system, West Virginia Wesleyan College is private. It enrolls approximately 1,400 students each year. Students have the option of selecting undergraduate degree programs from among 43 majors and graduate programs in athletic training and business administration. Other popular degree programs include music education, nursing and teacher education. West Virginia Wesleyan is an NCAA Division II school that boasts 19 qualified teams, more than 60 campus organizations, fraternities and sororities and religious activities.
