How to Cite Bulleted Texts in APA Style

The American Psychological Association created APA style citation methods to enable concise referencing of information throughout an academic or professional research paper while allowing proper credit to be given to the author. The APA citation guide does not cover every type of source possible, including bulleted lists. Therefore, it's recommended that if the type of source you are citing is not covered, then the resource should be cited based on the closest form of reference where a citation guide is provided.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the type of source that your bulleted list is from. The source could be a published journal, magazine, newspaper or book. Follow the specific format listed in the current APA manual to ensure that all aspects are included in the full reference. In general, APA follows a who, when, what and where format for all references.

    • 2

Type the name of the author, last name first, followed by a comma then the first and second initial.

    • 3

Enclose the year of the publication in parenthesis after the author's name. Place a period after the parenthesis.

    • 4

Type the title of the publication, in italics if required by the specific reference type, followed by a period. Only the first word of the title should be capitalized unless a person's name is in the title. In that case, the name should also be capitalized. After the title, close this part of the citation with a period.

    • 5

Type the place where the information can be found by the reader. For a website this will be the web address beginning with the "http://" protocol. For a book this will be the name of the publishing company, followed by a comma then the city of publication. For a journal this will be the name of the journal, followed by the volume and page numbers. Close the citation with a period.

    • 6

Cite the bulleted list in the text by placing the name of the author, followed by a comma then the year in parenthesis at the end of your sentence. If the bulleted list is more than one page long, place a comma after the year and indicate the page number where the bullet can be found.
