WGU, ranked by OEDb as one of the best online universities in the United States, is a fully online, nonprofit institution supported by 19 state governors. The university runs six-month sessions that can be started on the first of any month, including during the summer, and offers degree programs in business, education, information technology, nursing and health professions.
WGU's learning structure, which is competency-based, is much different than other schools. Rather than accumulate credit hours, WGU students acquire competency units by demonstrating learned skills. The faster students learn and prove acquired skills, the faster they are able to progress in their learning. The online platform is fully asynchronous, and provides students with access to research resources, learning materials, community discussions and strong academic mentoring services.

A number of state university systems, which consolidate networks of state schools, offer quality online programs that include summer sessions. (For example, the University of Texas System's UT TeleCampus, which connects 15 separate state institutions, offers online courses through its online education division.)
Students are encouraged to check with their respective state university system to inquire about available online sessions.
