Environmental Engineering Online Degrees

Environmental engineers work for large corporations, government agencies and conservation organizations by using scientific principles to solve environmental problems related to industrialization. While numerous environmental engineering programs are available from on-campus institutions, many nontraditional and working students are unable to attend brick-and-mortar schools due to their rigid schedules. Fortunately, a number of top schools offer online degree programs in environmental engineering.
  1. University of Florida

    • The University of Florida, a major state research university located in Gainesville, offers an online graduate program in environmental engineering. Students are required to take 30 credit hours of core engineering courses, and they can choose from three degree specializations: water resources planning and management, water, wastewater and stormwater engineering, and systems ecology and ecological engineering. Online courses are offered via the University of Florida's online learning platform, called UF EDGE. Lectures are on an asynchronous (archived) schedule, giving students the flexibility to learn whenever it is most convenient for them.

    University of Tennessee

    • The University of Tennessee, a public land-grant university located in Knoxville, offers an online Master of Science in Environmental Engineering through the school's Department of Distance Education and Independent Study. Students are required to complete 30 credit hours of core courses in the following areas of study: environmental chemistry, environmental transport, environment microbiology, water and waste treatment, solid and hazardous waste management, and air pollution engineering and control. Online courses are delivered on a synchronous (live) schedule, giving students the interactivity of real-time online learning. Additionally, students have access to online assignments, learning resources, student support services and discussion forums.

    Worcester Polytechnic Institute

    • Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), a private university founded in Massachusetts in 1865, was one of the first technology universities to open in the United States. WPI offers an online Master of Science in Environmental Engineering program, which typically takes 24 months to complete. Students in the program have two degree choices, including a thesis degree option and a non-thesis degree option. Students who choose to complete a thesis are required to take 30 credit hours of engineering courses, six of which are thesis hours. Those students who choose a non-thesis option are required to take 33 credit hours. Online courses are delivered on an asynchronous schedule, giving students the freedom to learn from home whenever they choose. Lectures are recorded on campus in WPI classrooms and streamed online for student viewing.
