The University of Southern California allows students to pursue a biomedical engineering degree entirely online, on campus or in a combination of the two. USC offers a Master of Science degree in biomedical engineering, a 28-credit-hour degree program that requires one seminar in biomedical engineering and core courses in physiological control systems, systems analysis and signals and advanced biomedical systems. Other courses are offered in technology commercialization, advanced neuroscience, mathematical biophysics and advanced linear control systems.

Purdue University is generally recognized as one of the top engineering schools in the nation. Its Master of Science degree in biomedical engineering can be pursued entirely online. Like the program at USC, the Purdue program is designed for working engineers who want to increase their marketability or simply expand their expertise in a given field. The program offers three areas of emphasis: bioengineering, biotechnology and biostatistics. Courses include the dynamics of human motion, biosensors, orthopedic biomechanics, regulatory issues in biomedical engineering, tissues engineering and biostatistics.

Colorado State University also offers an online degree option in biomedical engineering. Colorado State offers the Master of Engineering degree through its continuing education division. The 30-credit-hour program requires courses in areas such as biomedical and biotechnology membranes, bioengineering physics, material issues in mechanical design, data analysis and design and the structure and function of biomaterials. Four areas of specialization are materials engineering, structure and functions of biomaterials, data analysis and design and issues in mechanical design.
