Online Civil Engineering Schools

Civil engineers are experts in the scientific side of construction involving large public works projects and private large-scale construction such as oil rigs. Their academic expertise spans water resource management, environmental technology, hydraulics and other topics. Engineers who want to expand their knowledge of the field can earn master’s degrees in online graduate programs. High school seniors and others who want to enter the field can earn an online bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

    • Auburn University, a research institution in Alabama offers an online Master of Civil Engineering degree with an emphasis on environmental engineering. The online diploma option is a part of the school’s EDGE (Electronically Delivered Graduate Education) program. GetEducated.com lists Auburn’s online engineering degree as a “Best Buy” in its 2009 rankings. All applicants must have an undergraduate degree in engineering or a related field. The GRE is required. Students receive the same level of instruction and assignments as their on-campus colleagues. Students must pass an oral examination to receive the degree. In 2010, the cost of the program totaled $18,698. Financial aid is available.

    Colorado State University

    • Colorado State University offers an online Master of Engineering through its continuing education department. The degree is in civil engineering and a thesis is not required. Students must have an undergraduate degree in the field. The GRE is not required. The course load is similar to that of the on-campus program. A total of 30 credits are required for the degree. In 2010, each credit hour cost $598. Most students take one class per semester. CSU does not offer scholarships, but other forms of financial aid, such as loans, are available. The program is rated as a 2009 “Best Buy” by GetEducated.com.

    Kansas State University

    • The Kansas State University online degree master’s program in civil engineering is selective and requires applicants to have an undergraduate degree in the field and to submit GRE scores. While all courses are completed online, students must take an on-site comprehensive oral examination at the end of the program. The program is rated as a 2009 “Best Buy” by GetEducated.com. The cost per credit in 2009 - 2011 was $611. Financial aid, including scholarships specifically for distance-learning students, is available.

    University of North Dakota

    • The University of North Dakota offers an online Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. Classes are a mix of online instruction, recorded lectures and on-campus labs. Students in the program have the same curriculum as their on-campus colleagues. The ACT or SAT is required for admission for students under the age of 25. Financial aid is available. For the 2010-2011 academic year the cost per credit hour was $458.92 for in-state students and $852.22 for out-of-state students.
