Surgical Technology Program
The first step to becoming a surgical technologist is to complete an accredited surgical technology program. These programs are offered at community colleges, vocational schools, and some universities. The programs typically take two years to complete and include coursework in anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, and surgical procedures. Students also gain hands-on experience in the operating room under the supervision of experienced surgical technologists.
National Certification Exam
After completing an accredited surgical technology program, you must pass the national certification exam administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). The exam covers topics such as surgical procedures, instrumentation, and patient care. Passing the exam is required for licensure in most states.
Clinical Experience
Some states also require surgical technologists to complete an additional year of supervised clinical experience before they can be licensed. This experience typically involves working in an operating room under the supervision of a certified surgical technologist.
Continuing Education
Surgical technologists must complete continuing education courses to maintain their certification and licensure. These courses cover topics such as new surgical techniques and procedures, infection control, and patient safety.
