The University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine is a public, post-secondary education in the province of Alberta's largest city, Calgary. Established in 1967, the university offers admission to approximately 135 applicants per year, 115 of which are legal residents of Alberta, and the remaining 20 are residents of other Canadian provinces. Like the University of Alberta, the medical school requires students to complete two years of baccalaureate-level education in courses like mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry, English, and social sciences such as anthropology, psychology, and sociology. MCAT scores are also required. Students in the M.D. program have the opportunity to participate in innovative faculty research projects being conducted at the University of Calgary. The University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine is located in the province of British Columbia's largest city, Vancouver. The college is home to approximately 1,000 M.D. students. Less than 150 students are admitted to the school's medical program each year, which accounts for around 15 percent of all applicants. Preference is given to British Columbia residents, and only Canadian citizens and permanent residents are admitted to the school. To qualify for admission, students must submit MCAT scores and complete 90 credits of baccalaureate-level coursework scientific, mathematical, and liberal arts areas of study. In addition to its traditional M.D. program, the University of British Columbia also offers a joint M.D. and Ph.D. program, designed for students who wish to work as research physicians rather than in direct patient care.
