Courses in Mental Health Nursing

Mental health nursing is a branch of the Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) field for those with a bachelor's or even an advanced degree in nursing. Courses taken through master's and certificate programs will enable students to identify, diagnose and manage psychiatric disorders in chronic or acute cases.
  1. University of Toledo

    • Nurses who have a current Registered Nurse (RN) license and have already completed a master's degree may earn a graduate certificate as a psychiatric-mental health clinical nurse specialist from the University of Toledo. The 25-credit, two-year program is made up of eight courses that combine online study and 500 contact hours of clinical nursing practice.

    University of Washington

    • The University of Washington Psychosocial & Community Health department offers a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner graduate certificate program to licensed nurse practitioners, master of nursing and doctor of nursing degree-holders. This competitive program has a non-matriculated option that allows nursing students waiting for admission to take all non-clinical courses required for the degree. Non-matriculated course credits are valid for six years.

    University of Wyoming

    • Two psychiatric mental health programs are available from the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing at the University of Wyoming; the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program and the post-master certificate program. Both were established in 2005. Graduates of the two-year programs will be eligible to sit for the national Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) exam administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

    Vanderbilt School of Nursing

    • Vanderbilt's School of Nursing program offers a one-semester admission program for non-nursing graduates that leads to a two-year, five-semester psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner master's degree program. Students who hold a bachelor of science degree in nursing can complete the program in three semesters. Nursing students pursuing a master's degree can complete the program in 16 to 30 credit hours. Students can take the classes on campus or via distance-learning, with curriculum materials delivered via CD ROM and online. The program requires between 500 and 620 hours of clinical practice for completion.
