The University of Cambridge has been rated the top law school in the United Kingdom by the Times Good University Guide. Cambridge offers five degrees in Law. The Bachelor of Arts requires passing three separate qualifying exams and takes three years to earn. The LL.M. is the Master of Laws degree, a one-year graduate study in which the student explores a specialized area of law. The Diploma in Legal Studies or the Diploma in International Law are full time, one-year graduate research studies that require a dissertation and work with a faculty adviser. Two research degrees lead to either the MLitt or the Ph.D. (The MLitt or Master of Letters falls between a Bachelor's degree and a doctorate.) Candidates for these degrees are required to take oral examinations and to submit dissertations. The LL.D. (Doctor of Laws) can be awarded for an original contribution to the field of law by a scholar of extraordinary distinction. It implies authority in the field and the qualification goes far beyond the standard for a doctorate.
