Cambridge University is one of the United Kingdom's oldest institutions of higher education and has been offering law as a subject since the thirteenth century, when students would study both the civil law of ancient Rome and canon law relating to the Church. In 2010, the Faculty of Law at Cambridge had approximately 700 undergraduates and 225 postgraduates, with a teaching staff of more than 70 that included 16 professors and 10 readers of law. The faculty is housed in a Norman Foster-designed building on the university's Sidgwick Site to the west of Cambridge city center. The building includes the faculty's Squire Law Library, which contains one of the biggest collections of law material in the UK. The University of Cambridge offers Bachelor of Arts law degree programs at the undergraduate level, in addition to a Master of Law (LL.M), a 2-year diploma in the law and a 3-year Ph.D research program at the postgraduate level. According to the Times of London Good University Guide 2010, Cambridge has the U.K.'s top law school.

Oxford is the oldest university in the United Kingdom and has offered law as a subject for more than 800 years. Oxford also is home to the U.K.'s largest law school, which actually is a combination of the 30 law schools across the many colleges of the university. As of 2010, at undergraduate level, 85 percent of the students in the faculty were British, with 15 percent of them being international. The law school offers a 3-year Bachelor of Arts law degree and a 4-year Bachelor of Arts law degree with law studies in Europe, with one of those years spent in a university in either Italy, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands or France. These programs are unique in the U.K. because they are taught in what Oxford University calls "pair tutorials," where the focus of the tutorial is solely on an individual student and his work. Oxford also offers a 1-year diploma in legal studies, which is a course lifted from a sample of courses studied in the Bachelor of Arts program. Postgraduate programs offered include: Bachelor of Civil Law, Masters in Law and Finance, Master of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice, Master of Philosophy in Criminology, Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice, and Master of Studies in International Human Rights Law. In addition, Oxford also claims it has the "largest doctoral program in Law in the English-speaking world." Oxford was ranked second by the Times' Good University Guide 2010 of Law university's in the U.K.

London School of Economics was founded in 1895 and in 2010 it was ranked by the Times Good University Guide as the third best law university in the United Kingdom. The school has a long history of uncovering new areas of study and was the first university in the country to teach banking law, taxation law, company law, family law, welfare law, labor law and civil litigation. The university offers undergraduate LL.B law degrees, graduate programs including Masters in Law and Accounting Law and LL.M Master of Law, plus a number of Ph.D. programs. Students at the law school benefit from more than 60 full-time academic staff members, including 20 professors, as well as the school's proximity to London's Royal Courts of Justice.
