The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) provides a variety of career paths for those desiring to become a counselor. UNCW started out as a two-year college in 1947, became the sixth university in the UNC system in 1969 and today offers undergraduate and graduate programs including a master's in social work.

Walden University received accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission, is a member of the North Central Higher Learning Commission and is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Walden also boasts a master's of science program in mental health counseling as well as a doctorate program for those wishing to further their career paths.
