Top Engineering Schools in Tennessee

Several of Tennessee's public and private research universities contain engineering schools, including two schools ranked among the nation's top 70 engineering graduate schools by U.S. News & World Report. Several of these schools have academic traditions with beginnings in the 19th century. Students at Tennessee's engineering schools can work toward undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of engineering fields, including chemical engineering, environmental engineering, computer engineering and mechanical engineering.
  1. Vanderbilt University

    • The School of Engineering at Vanderbilt University, a private research university, was founded in 1879. The school offers courses and degree programs in five different departments, including biomedical, chemical and biomolecular, civil and environmental, electrical and mechanical engineering. Undergraduates at the school can work toward Bachelor of Engineering degrees in six different fields or Bachelor of Science degrees in two fields. The school also grants masters and doctoral degrees. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked Vanderbilt University's School of Engineering 39th among the nation's engineering graduate schools.

    University of Tennessee at Knoxville

    • The College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, a public research university, was founded in 1838. The college offers degree programs within eight academic departments, including the departments of biosystems, chemical, civil and environmental, electrical, industrial, mechanical and nuclear engineering. The college also offers an honors program, an online education program, and a dual Master of Science (MS) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program. The College of Engineering also oversees the nearby University of Tennessee Space Institute. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Tennessee at Knoxville 68th among the nation's engineering graduate schools.

    Tennessee State University

    • Tennessee State University is a historically black public university founded in 1912. As of 2009, the university had about 8,500 undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students. The university's College of Engineering, Technology and Computer Science, accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, grants Bachelor of Science degrees in seven different fields, Master of Engineering degrees in six different fields and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in computer and information systems engineering. Available fields of study include architectural, civil, environmental, electrical and mechanical engineering.
