Top Engineering Schools in Michigan

Several of Michigan's public and private universities offer engineering programs that have been highly ranked in U.S. News & World Report. Undergraduates studying engineering in Michigan can work toward the Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) degrees, and graduate students can work toward the Master of Science (MS), Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.

In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked the school among the nation's top ten engineering schools in nine specialty fields, including aeronautical, computer, civil, environmental, mechanical, electrical, industrial, materials and nuclear engineering. The same magazine ranked the University of Michigan 9th overall among engineering graduate schools, and 7th among undergraduate engineering programs where doctorate degrees are offered.

    • Kettering University, a private university with an emphasis on engineering, math and science, was founded in 1919. As of 2009, the school had about 2,100 undergraduates and 500 graduate students. The college offers undergraduate degree programs in chemical, computer, electrical, industrial and mechanical engineering, and graduate degree programs in automotive, electrical, computer, manufacturing and mechanical engineering. Students can also work toward dual degrees in engineering and mathematics fields. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked Kettering University 1st among undergraduate industrial and manufacturing engineering programs where doctorate degrees are not offered.

MSU's College of Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in seven primary departments, including applied engineering, agricultural engineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering and computer science. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked Michigan State University 58th among the nation's engineering graduate schools.
