The faculty of the University of Illinois' Engineering School includes both Nobel laureates and Pulitzer Prize winners. The school was ranked the fifth best engineering school in the U.S. by "U.S. News & World Report" in 2009. Also in 2009, the "Princeton Review" named this school one of the best values in American higher education. The group Open Doors rated this school fifth nationally in its ranking of the top 20 research institutions. Additionally, the University of Illinois was ranked eighth of all Ph.D-granting institutions in the United States and Puerto Rico for the number of doctoral degrees it has awarded.

The College of Engineering at the University of Michigan was ranked seventh best in the country by "U.S. News & World Report" in 2009. It is the oldest public engineering institution (determined by first degree granted) and has more than 65,000 living alumni. The college grants bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D degrees and has top-rated programs for both graduate and undergraduate students in nearly every area of engineering. With a faculty of more than 300 instructors, the college has 12 engineering sub-departments and offers more than 60 specific areas of focus.

In 2009, Purdue was ranked 87th on the list of top universities in the world by Times Higher Education. "U.S. News & World Report" rated it the ninth best engineering school in the United States in 2009. "SmartMoney" magazine rated it the ninth best college for long-term value of education. The university's website says that within six months of graduation, "95 percent of Purdue engineering alumni are employed, continuing their education, or pursuing other confirmed plans." There are 16 different majors offered within the engineering college.
