The top engineering school in the state of Minnesota is the University of Minnesota's Institute of Technology in Minneapolis. U.S. News & World Report ranked the program No. 23 in the nation in 2009. The school compares favorably with many of the other top engineering programs in the nation because of the breadth of its degree programs and the number of different areas of specialization open to students. The chemical engineering program at the University of Minnesota consistently rates among the top 10 programs in the country each year. This is true of both the Minneapolis and Duluth campuses alike. The Institute of Technology offers degrees in aerospace engineering and mechanics, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering and bioproducts and biosystems engineering. Many of the school's science departments such as physics and chemistry are also housed within the school. The school sponsors multiple research centers such as the Center for Nanostructure Applications and the Industrial Partnership for Research in Interfacial and Materials Engineering. Aside from the undergraduate major offered in the various areas of specialization, students can pursue joint degrees, combining either a Bachelor of Arts or a Master of Arts degree with the Bachelor of Science. Graduate degree programs are offered in nearly every field at the master's degree and PhD levels.

Although not nationally ranked (only the University of Minnesota received national ranking), St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota, is generally recognized as one of the better engineering programs in the state because of the specialized programs that it offers. Departments within the St. Cloud University College of Science and Engineering computer science, electrical and computer engineering and mechanical and manufacturing engineering. Bachelor's degrees are offered in each of these fields as a major. At the graduate level, students can pursue master's degrees in a variety of fields such as computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering management and physics, astronomy and engineering science.
