Auto mechanics and technicians are responsible for inspecting, repairing and maintaining automobiles. Workers are usually employed by service shops but may also work for roadside assistance companies. Vocational training is usually considered sufficient to get a job, but employers value real-world experience as well. According to indeed.com, auto mechanics earn an average of $39,000 a year in California as of 2010. The state of California has various schools that offer auto mechanic vocational training.

    • The Wyoming Technical Institute (Wyo Tech) has four California locations--Sacramento, Fremont, Laramie and Long Beach--as well as two locations outside of California (Blairsville, Penn. and Ormond Beach, Fla.). The Sacramento campus opened in 2004; it offers programs in applied service management, automotive technology, high performance engine, chassis fabrication and collision/refinishing. Classes incorporate lectures and demonstrations, as well as in-shop, hands-on training as part of the educational experience. The one-year programs at Wyo Tech are four days a week, five hours every day.

    Cosumnes River College

    • The Cosumnes River College (CRC) in Sacramento has an automotive technology department that is certified by the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and backed by the Ford Motor Company’s Automotive Student Service Educational Training (ASSET). This program offers both certifications in specialized mechanics technology fields such as brakes, and/or an associate’s degree in automotive mechanics technology. For those students with busy schedules, weekend and eight-week courses are available. Because CRC is a community college, admission is awarded to those applicants who have completed high school or who have GED certification.

    Universal Technical Institute

    • The Universal Technical Institute (UTI) has many locations throughout the United States. The Rancho Cucamonga campus in California is a branch of the UTI Arizona main campus. UTI not only offers programs for automotive technology but also for motorcycle, diesel, collision repair and National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) technology. The automotive program at UTI includes the automotive technology core plus your choice of the BMW Fast Track, the Nissan advanced technician training (NATT), the Ford accelerated credential training (FACT), the Toyota professional automotive training (TPAT) or all of the above. A mixture of hands-on experience training plus theoretical in-room training give graduates a well-rounded education.
