California State University at Chico's Athletic Training education program is a subdivision of the Department of Kinesiology. Conferring an M.A. degree upon graduation, the program offers paid clinical experiences with the university's athletic staff, and at local high schools. There is also option for support through doctoral study, for those individuals seeking to continue beyond the Masters level.
San Jose State University offers a Master of Arts with an Athletic Training concentration. The program is unique from others in that it incorporates students from different focuses of study to work together on various certifications, offering a more dynamic and complete education. They also evince a holistic approach to their training education, including a strong focus on their specialty areas of leadership and communication.
Offering a Master of Science in Athletic Training, California Baptist University is the only program of its kind which offers an M.S. degree in the state of California. Specifically of note at California Baptist is the experience offered through its clinical opportunities. At least eight diverse experiences must be undergone by students in order to graduate. These practical opportunities are available through the university and local schools, but also through hospitals, medical offices and other local independent events. In addition, as a Christian university, California Baptist adamantly embraces a philosophy of treating the entire individual human behind the injury, not just the wound on the surface.
Although it does not offer an athletic training program, Concordia University's Master of Arts in Coaching and Athletic Administration is the next closest approximation within the state of California. Located in Irvine, California, outside of Los Angeles, Concordia's program covers a broad spectrum of coaching-related issues and subjects. Though not medically based, courses are offered in sports psychology and sports medicine, providing students with at least a rudimentary understanding of important physical issues.
