DePaul University has a faculty of 110 professional musicians. Many perform with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The faculty members bring their expertise to aspiring music professionals. DePaul offers small class sizes, with a student-to-teacher ratio of 9-to-1. DePaul has undergraduate programs in a variety of subjects, such as jazz studies, composition, performance, sound recording technology and music education, in addition to teacher certifications for those who have completed a bachelor's degree in music and would like to teach in Illinois' K-12 schools. There also are master's programs in performance, composition, music education and jazz studies.

Columbia College Chicago offers programs designed to prepare students to use music in the real world. The program combines a strong educational experience with creativity. The faculty has musicians who have played with Ray Charles, Ramsey Lewis and others. Workshops are given by artists in residence, such as Jon Faddis, the artistic director of the Chicago Jazz Ensemble. Columbia's music program lets students interact with other programs on campus, such as film/video, theater, audio arts and acoustics, and television. Undergraduate programs include composition, instrumental performance, jazz studies and vocal performance. Columbia College Chicago also offers a master's degree in music composition for the screen. Students can learn to score music for video games, television and film, and spend a semester in Los Angeles to gain real-world experience.
